What Luxury Vinyl Plank and Tile Are
Luxury vinyl comes in two main forms, and we install both. The first is rigid-core, click-together plank — a floating floor that snaps together over an underlayment without glue. The second is glue-down luxury vinyl tile, including glue-down grouted LVT: individual tiles bonded to the subfloor with grout lines between them, giving you the look of tile that is warmer and softer underfoot than ceramic.
Both are built to mimic wood or stone convincingly, and both are made to handle water and wear better than the floors they imitate. The look has come a long way — a well-chosen luxury vinyl floor reads as wood or stone in a finished room, not as plastic.
Where It Shines, and Where It Doesn't
Luxury vinyl is the floor we reach for first in kitchens, bathrooms, mudrooms, basements, and homes with pets and young kids. It takes spills, paw traffic, and dropped dishes in stride, and it is forgiving underfoot in a way tile is not. Grouted LVT in particular gives a bathroom or entry the look of real tile without the cold, hard feel.
Here is the honest part: a "waterproof" plank does not make a waterproof floor. The plank itself resists water through its body, but water that gets underneath it — at a seam, an edge, or a slow leak — can still reach the subfloor and sit there. We install with attention to seams and edges, but no floating floor is a barrier against flooding. And not every product is rated for unheated three-season rooms, where temperature swings exceed what the flooring was designed for. Check the rating first, and we will help you read it.
How Luxury Vinyl Handles Minnesota Homes
Minnesota's wet and messy seasons are where luxury vinyl earns its place. Winter brings road salt, slush, and boots tracking all of it inside; spring brings mud and melt. A floor you can mop clean, that will not stain or warp from a wet boot, is a practical thing to have at an entry or in a mudroom.
Basements are a strong fit too, because luxury vinyl handles the higher humidity and the occasional dampness of a below-grade space far better than wood. Dry winter air that would shrink solid hardwood barely affects a vinyl plank. For a busy household across the seasons, it is one of the most forgiving floors you can choose.
Subfloor and Prep: Why It Matters for Vinyl
Luxury vinyl is thin and flexible compared to wood, which means it follows the subfloor closely. A ridge, a dip, or a loose patch underneath will show through as a visible telegraph or, over time, as a worn spot. Flat and clean is the goal before install.
For glue-down and grouted LVT, the subfloor also has to accept adhesive — it needs to be dry and sound, or the bond fails and tiles lift. We check moisture, fill and smooth the surface, and make sure transitions to adjoining rooms are planned before any tile or plank is set. The prep is what keeps a vinyl floor lying flat for years.
How Our Installation Works
For floating planks, we lay a quality underlayment, acclimate the product to the room, and click the planks together with staggered seams and proper expansion room at the edges. For glue-down and grouted LVT, we set each tile in adhesive, work the layout so cuts land where they look intentional, and grout the lines for that genuine tile appearance.
Throughout, we keep seams tight, transitions clean, and the room sealed at the perimeter. We install and we repair, and we are clear about what we do not do: we do not sand and refinish hardwood, and we do not take commercial work. If your project is residential, we will see it through from consultation to final walkthrough.
